In deciding their future, the City of Glasgow College identified the drivers which are key to achieving the best educational vision for Glasgow’s learners. The ambition of the College is to:

  • Enhance the curriculum and improve choice for students
  • Promote sector-leading vocational disciplines to students and industry
  • Ensure the future of more specialised courses
  • Focus and strengthen links with higher education institutions
  • Improve the accessibility of learning resources to students and the wider community
  • Meet key governmental policy targets.

The College tested these ambitions against a number of delivery models – from a full merger to staying as separate colleges. A full merger to create a single College was identified as the right option for delivering the best possible educational benefits to learners. Merger approval was granted by the Scottish Government and the City of Glasgow College was formed on 1st September 2010. To deliver the educational vision of the new, merged College, a new estate is essential. The existing estate constrains the College's ability to meet the demands of future learning and teaching styles. These constraints include:

  • Current buildings are out-dated, in relatively poor condition and expensive to operate
  • The accommodation and facilities do not enable diverse and new learning styles to be introduced
  • Learning environments are not relevant to the world of work
  • Current facilities don’t welcome or meet the needs of new learners and groups
  • Many of the buildings are listed creating issues with refurbishment and upgrading.
