former bbc head leads glasgow supercampus project

4 Oct 2008

The architect of BBC Scotland's move to Pacific Quay has been handed the job of delivering one of Europe's most ambitious education projects, New Campus Glasgow.

A multi-million pound build in the centre of Glasgow, it is the biggest construction project in the sector, with building due to start in 2011.

Former Price Waterhouse accountant and senior BBC Programme Director, Iain Marley will lead the project that will see the construction of a new joint campus for the 50,000 students and 2,000 staff of Glasgow's four specialist city centre colleges: Central College, Metropolitan College, Stow College and Glasgow College of Nautical Studies.

The project will co-locate the four existing colleges on a shared campus over two sites - City Campus at Cathedral Street, home of Central and Metropolitan Colleges and Riverside Campus at Thistle Street, site of the Nautical College.

He will lead a team of advisors and in-house staff and has overall responsibility for project planning, design, procurement, financing, construction and facilities management.

Iain comes with a track record of project management success that includes various public and private sector property and change management projects including the restructuring of BBC Radio 4 in London.

Donald Leitch, Programme Sponsor, who represents the four colleges, said: "Iain has a wealth of project management experience across a range of sectors including, consulting and operational roles with Price Waterhouse and the BBC. He has significant experience in delivering real strategic benefits from all the projects he has been involved in, from leading complex contract negotiations to implementing new technology and transition management. I'm delighted to have someone of his experience on board to progress this project through the critical development phase."

"This is a huge, complex project that is a key driver for Scotland's economy in the coming decades. Now with a team in place and project manager of Iain's calibre we will really see some progress in the months to come."

The project timeline for New Campus Glasgow is currently being developed with a detailed business case scheduled to be unveiled before the year end and submitted to the Scottish Funding Council in March 09.

"This project represents a great opportunity for the city. It's not just an estates project; it's the chance for us to create something really special for Glasgow. I'm looking forward to working with the range of partners to deliver a world class learning resource," said Iain.
