get on board the green travel plan

3 May 2010

New Campus Glasgow is aiming to be a flagship development for sustainable design and management. As part of these ambitions, we will be implementing a green travel plan – an integrated set of measures designed to promote and improve accessibility to the sites for public transport, bikes and pedestrians.

The new campus will have significantly less car parking spaces due to town planning policies and regulations. Glasgow City Council is responsible for determining the number of parking spaces available. Being in the city centre, both the city and the riverside campus will be subject to the strictest parking controls and therefore, for many, car parking will no longer exist.

Now, staff and students have their chance to shape how we go forward with our sustainability plans. Through NCG, Atkins (who is developing the green travel plan) has issued questionnaires to all staff and students to build up an accurate picture of travel and transport. It also seeks constructive suggestions on ways to improve transport arrangements to both campuses.

Clare Beck, Communications Consultant for New Campus Glasgow, urged as many members of staff and students as possible to complete the survey. She said: “I know how much concern the reduction in parking is causing, but we have to find a way to work with it. Providing extra parking spaces isn’t an option – Glasgow City Council sets the parking provision and we must work within the planning guidelines.

“Glasgow is very well served by public transport and New Campus Glasgow is committed to doing all it can to improve the accessibility of the campuses for public transport, bikes and pedestrians. This survey is an opportunity for us all to be part of creating an innovative solution befitting of such a landmark sustainable development. The responses we have received to date have been overwhelmingly constructive and I’ve already seen a few fantastic ideas coming through. We really appreciate the support that staff and students have already shown.”
