New Campus Glasgow reaches first planning milestone

6 May 2010

New Campus Glasgow recently reached a major milestone in the planning process when its Development Framework was accepted by Glasgow City Council’s Business and Economic Policy Committee.

The Framework, produced by New Campus Glasgow, Atkins and GVA Grimley, outlines the masterplan and development strategy for the twin-campus project, which is an integral part of the visionary new City of Glasgow College. The project will create high-quality, sustainable learning environments for the new super college, which will be formed through the merger of Glasgow’s Central, Metropolitan and Nautical Colleges. The new college will be located across two campuses; the City campus at Cathedral Street and the Riverside campus at Thistle Street.

Iain Marley, Project Director for New Campus Glasgow Ltd, said: “This is an important milestone for this significant project which will not only provide the highest quality learning environments for future generations in Glasgow but also contribute significantly to the regeneration of the city communities and the Clyde Waterfront.

“New Campus Glasgow will replace the inefficient, out of date and increasingly costly existing estates of Central, Metropolitan and Nautical Colleges. The new estate will provide the very best learning environments, with flexible layouts and state of the art facilities and equipment to cover a broad and comprehensive range of subjects. It will also be a landmark development for sustainable design and management.”

The acceptance of New Campus Glasgow’s Development Framework by Glasgow City Council is the first step in the planning process for this exciting project. The £300 million estate, primarily funded by the Scottish Funding Council, will be at the heart of the city’s emerging learning quarter. The project is proceeding at pace and is on schedule to submit the full planning application to the council in August 2010.

New Campus Glasgow represents the biggest investment made in Glasgow’s learners to date and will provide the city with a world-class, landmark and sustainable estate that will symbolise the Scottish Government’s commitment to investment in its students and meeting the needs of industry.
