project history
In 2006 Glasgow’s four city centre colleges – Central, Metropolitan, Nautical and Stow – and the Scottish Funding Council (SFC) united around a common vision to develop a shared campus. The Colleges were concerned over the constraints of the existing estate and its ability to meet the demands of future learning and teaching styles. Several major constraints of the existing estate were identified:
- Current buildings are out-dated, in relatively poor condition and expensive to operate
- The accommodation and facilities do not enable diverse and new learning styles to be introduced
- Learning environments are not relevant to the world of work
- Current facilities don’t welcome or meet the needs of new learners and groups
- Many of the buildings are listed creating issues with refurbishment and upgrading.
An outline business case was agreed and New Campus Glasgow Ltd was set up by the colleges as an independent company in May 2008 to finalise the business case and deliver the project.
Work began in earnest on developing the masterplan for the existing and proposed college sites and the business case to secure the funding from the SFC. In March 2009, Stow withdrew and the other 3 colleges agreed to merge and take the plans forward.
Since then, New Campus Glasgow – together with our project managers Turner & Townsend – has been working on establishing the requirements for the new, merged college. In September 2009 we appointed our design team Atkins to oversee the design of the new campus. And by the end of 2009 we have nailed down the big issues – where the campus will be, how big it will be and what it will provide.
