Marine Skills Centre
The Marine Skills Centre, sited at the Riverside Campus, is the first piece of building work for the New Campus Glasgow project.
The College already enjoys a high profile globally and attracts high numbers of international students. This early phase of work was completed on time and under budget in May 2010 creating a world class £5.6 million teaching space on the Clyde Waterfront beside Albert Bridge. It will create a new landmark on the banks of the river and provides state of the art facilities for maritime students. Its city centre location makes it unique among the few specialist maritime colleges in the UK, while the river setting gives students realistic and exciting learning experiences – just look out for the launch of our freefall lifeboat if you want to see for yourself!
Designed by architects BDP and built by C Spencer Ltd. The building sits in an elevated position and appears to float above the river. It is approached by gangways – reflecting the nautical tradition – that at the same time improves security. There is a practice pontoon and an impressive free fall life boat built out from the banks where the existing teaching centre sits.
The Marine Skills Centre also contributes to the Clyde Waterfront partnership – Scotland’s single most significant urban renewal project and development opportunity, with around £5.6bn of public and private sector investment. The 15 year plan for waterfront regeneration will transform one of the world’s most famous rivers.
