Minister For Skills And Lifelong Learning Opens Marine Skills Centre
22 Jun 2010Keith Brown, Minister for Skills and Lifelong Learning, officially opened the new 5.6 million Marine Skills Centre, the first building to be completed for the new City of Glasgow College, on Monday 21 June.
The Minister was greeted by the Principal Designate and some of the uniformed cadets who will be using the Marine Skills Centre to gain their maritime qualifications. Keith Brown, Minister for Skills and Lifelong Learning, commented: "I was delighted to be able to celebrate the opening of this terrific, state-of-the-art asset for Glasgow and indeed for Scotland.

Landmark Marine Skills Centre completes on time, on budget

It’s official! Construction work on the Marine Skills Centre – the first landmark in the New Campus Glasgow supercampus for City of Glasgow College – is now complete. And we’re happy to report that the project has been delivered on time and on budget.
Our contractor, C Spencer Ltd, completed the construction work for the end of April as planned. Over the next couple of weeks, they will clear the site of all the supporting materials, structures and buildings to reveal this beautiful new addition to the Clyde waterfront in all its glory.

Commander in Chief fleet visits Marine Skills Centre

The Commander-in-Chief-Fleet of the Royal Navy visited Glasgow College of Nautical Studies and New Campus Glasgow's state of the art Marine Skills Centre on the River Clyde this week, and was impressed by the facilities which students will start using in the autumn.
As Commander-in-Chief-Fleet, Admiral Sir Trevor Soar is responsible for providing ships, submarines, aircraft and Royal Marine units ready in all respects for any operations that the UK Government requires. He is also a NATO Commander and is tasked to ensure NATO maritime forces are ready to engage in joint and combined operations as required by the North Atlantic Council. He was invited to the College by Janet Okten, Principal of Glasgow College of Nautical Studies.

Marine Skills Centre plans are ship shape

Funding has been approved for a new £5.6 million Marine Skills Centre at Glasgow College of Nautical Studies. This is the first building to be constructed as part of the New Campus Glasgow project that aims to create a £300 million estate for Glasgow's city centre colleges -Central, Metropolitan and Nautical. Work is due to begin in June and take around a year to complete.
The new Centre on the banks of the River Clyde is supported with a £5.2 million grant from the Scottish Funding Council (SFC). It will include a new state-of-the-art teaching facility, the refurbishment of existing classrooms to be used as a workshop, and a new pontoon with free-fall lifeboat.
